Become a Student Editor

FIUURJ relies on the diligent work of student editors in the review and editing of proposals and manuscripts, supporting student writers during the writing process, and creation of digital projects for the journal.

Who is Eligible?

Current FIU undergraduate students in their junior/senior year, graduate students, and recent alumni are welcome to join! Students must have taken at least one editing and/or upper-division (ENC) course, such as ENC 4260 Professional Writing, ENC 3491 Processes of Writing, or their equivalent in other disciplines (e.g. IDH 4905).

Why Become an FIUURJ Student Editor?

Students editors for FIU’s Undergraduate Research Journal receive experience in proposal review, copy-editing, digital project management, professional communication skills, and hands on experience in the publishing process.

They are expected to deligently attend training sessions and board meetings as well as regularly communicate with their assigned student writer and help them as much as they request in the drafting and editing of their submission.

What to Expect:

  1. Attend a series of trainings from faculty members and librarians.
  2. Participate in monthly board meetings on Zoom.
  3. Participate in student editor meetings on Zoom.
  4. Review abstract submissions to see if they are appropriate for disciplinary review during summer.
  5. Coordinate a disciplinary review with faculty reviewers during Fall 2022.
  6. Review and copyedit resubmissions, when needed.
  7. Select a self-designed or self-taken image for the volume’s cover.
  8. An internship credit can be shown on your transcript.

What to Submit:

  1. Your resume
  2. A sample of your academic writing (published or unpublished)
  3. Snapshot of your unofficial transcript to show you have taken at least one editing and/or upper-division (ENC) course, such as ENC 4260 Professional Writing, ENC 3491 Processes of Writing, or their equivalent
  4. A 200-word personal statement to show your interest in and connection to editing
  5. Your expected graduation date

Student Editor Positions

Being a student editor for FIUURJ allows you to gain skills in abstract review, copy-editing, leadership, and digital project management. The experience gained from FIUURJ will follow you as you apply to graduate schools and future job positions!

Students currently enrolled at FIU are allowed to apply for a position on the editorial board. The position is active for a year (e.g May 29th 2022-2023) and is renewable. The next application season is scheduled for Spring 2023.

As a member of FIUURJ’s Student Editorial Board, you will: 

  • Participate in board meetings and editorial training sessions on zoom or in-person at the CEW in GL 125.
  • Review submissions to see if they are appropriate for disciplinary review.
  • Work with student writers in the creation and editing of their manuscript for submission and publication.
  • Engage in journal related projects such as website design, email account management, and social media marketing.
