to FIU’s First Undergraduate Research Journal, for Undergraduates by Undergraduates!

About Us

Florida International University’s Undergraduate Research Journal (FIUURJ) is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed academic journal, looking to publish promising undergraduate research and provide professional development opportunities for undergraduate students. FIUURJ is the collaborative effort of the Center for Excellence in Writing, FIU Liberal Studies, the Honors College, the Humanities Edge, FIU Research and Economic Development, MARC U*STAR, FIU Libraries, the Undergraduate Research Society, FIU Writing and Rhetoric Program, and FIU’s Digital Writing Studio.

Launched in Summer 2022, FIUURJ accepts submissions from undergraduate students in STEM, social sciences, arts, and humanities who wish to publish their research to a wide audience. This journal is run by and for undergraduate students along with faculty advisers and volunteers. Our mission is to create opportunities for undergraduates and FIU alumni to become involved with and build experience in editing, digital project creating, peer-reviewing, and peer-advising. FIUURJ has just finished its third volume and is actively working on its fourth volume!

The upcoming fourth volume, to be published in June 2026, is our first special issue. The Volume 4 special issue theme is Technology & Innovation. Visit our “Spring 2026 Special Issue” webpage to learn m0re about what to expect in Volume 4.

Soon, the FIUURJ will begin accepting applications for the second special issue to be published in Spring 2027. The Volume 5 special issue theme will be Environment & Environmental Resilience. Read the Call for Proposals to learn more about how to approach the theme with an interdisciplinary lens. Visit the “Spring 2027 Special Issue” webpage to learn more about the Volume 5 application process.

Dr. Hutchinson shared writing tips that will be especially helpful for students interested in submitting an abstract or proposal to FIUURJ Volume 5.

Members of the FIUURJ Editorial Board also shared resources and advice for a strong application.

“Writing the Abstract and Introduction” was hosted by FIUURJ Advisory Board member Dr. Glenn Hutchinson Jr via Zoom on Thursday, May 14th, 11am-12pm.

Student Involvement

While FIUURJ aims to provide a platform for the academic ambition of the undergraduate writer, we also take pride in the professional role undergraduates play as Student Editor and Editorial Interns.  Student Editors review the proposals of Student Writers then collaborate on drafting and revising full manuscripts for publication through essential feedback and supportive consultations. Editorial Interns design digital material and maintain communication publicly and privately within the advisory, editorial, and faculty board. Each undergraduate team member contributes to the quality, progress, and overall success of the journal.

Undergraduate Research

At FIUURJ we strive to publish manuscripts from the undergraduate perspective on a yearly basis in order to provide frequent authorship opportunities for students. For many at FIU, this will be their first opportunity to publish research professionally and share it with an academic audience. This journal makes an effort to be a progressive, inclusive, and collaborative platform for Student Writers to contribute to the university writing culture directly. The faculty of FIUURJ is dedicated to supporting undergraduate students, ensuring its writers, editors, and interns have the resources necessary to succeed after graduation.
